Watch for this to become the standard over the next few years. Shelf space is a premium item, and the more items that can fit, the better for the distributor and retailer stance. DVD style boxes (height and width standard) will within the next year or so become the *only* packaging format for any game.
The trend will be slower to take hold in the North America region, but the seeds have already been sown, and the movement is underway. Anyone bother to notice what PS2, Xbox and Gamecube all have in common?
DVD dimension packaging for software. This is the first time that *all* consoles from competing groups all have the same format packaging? Think that is coincidence?
So, what do we do for games such as Civ or Moo or Baldur's Gate, etc where the manual is actually something of thickness *and* of use? The collector's box is the most likely route. A DVD style box that is thick enough to contain the manual. A good example of the potential of this route can be seen in the DVD/CD box set Tool put out called Salival.
So, from my stance I'm happy to not have the wasted box space, but I mourn it in the same way I miss album covers being these big, wonderful pieces of art.
